Politics and International Relations

Law & Public Administration

Duration

4 years

Level

Bachelor

Outlook

Stable

What will you learn?

Studying Politics and International Relations gives you a thorough grounding in how power works at local, national and global levels. You will examine political theory, comparative government, Irish and European Union institutions, foreign policy, and international organisations such as the United Nations. Modules typically blend lectures with seminars, where you are expected to read widely, debate policy positions and write analytical essays. Many programmes include a placement or study-abroad semester — often through Erasmus+ — at a partner university in Europe or beyond. By your final year you will likely undertake a substantial research dissertation on a topic of your choosing, drawing on skills in qualitative research, data analysis and academic writing.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO system and typically requires a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including English at Ordinary level or above. Points are generally competitive, meaning you will need a strong overall performance across your subjects. While there are no strictly mandatory higher-level subjects, Higher Level English, History, and a modern language are all considered very useful and may strengthen your application. Many universities also accept QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards through designated progression pathways, particularly for mature students returning to education. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature-student route and are typically assessed by interview and personal statement. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at participating institutions for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for graduates with strong analytical and communications skills remains steady in Ireland, particularly as EU policy continues to affect Irish legislation and business. The civil service holds regular open competitions through the Public Appointments Service, giving politics graduates a clear and well-structured recruitment route. Roles in EU institutions are highly competitive but Irish citizens are actively encouraged to apply, and a degree in Politics and International Relations provides strong preparation. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study or professional qualifications in law, public policy or journalism to specialise further.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in political analysis, election forecasting and the monitoring of disinformation campaigns, meaning graduates who understand both the political and technical dimensions of AI will be in demand. Policy work around AI regulation — particularly at EU level through frameworks such as the AI Act — is creating new roles for those with expertise in governance and international affairs. At the same time, AI tools are changing how research is conducted, with automated data collection and text analysis becoming standard in academic and professional settings. Students who develop digital literacy alongside traditional political science skills will be better placed in a rapidly evolving policy environment.
