This QQI Level 5 course gives you practical, hands-on training in professional food and beverage service across restaurant, hotel, and bar environments. You will develop skills in table service techniques, bar operations, customer care, and the presentation of food and drink to industry standards. Wine appreciation, beverage knowledge, and allergen awareness form core parts of the programme. A typical week involves practical sessions on the college's training floor alongside theory classes covering food hygiene and HACCP legislation. Work placement in a local hotel, restaurant, or hospitality venue is a key component, giving you real-world experience and industry contacts before you finish the course.

Bartender's Course in Ireland
Entry to this QQI Level 5 programme typically requires a Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied, though a Junior Cycle qualification combined with relevant work experience may be considered by some colleges. There are no strict Higher-level subject requirements, though English is important given the customer-facing nature of the role. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly to the college without formal qualifications and will be assessed on life and work experience. Those who have completed a QQI Level 4 Hospitality or related programme can also progress directly onto this course. Some ETB colleges operate VTOS and other access schemes for eligible applicants returning to education.
Demand for trained food and beverage staff remains consistently strong in Ireland, particularly in Dublin, Cork, Galway, and tourist regions during the busy summer season. Hotels, restaurants, and hospitality venues regularly report difficulties filling skilled front-of-house positions, meaning qualified graduates are generally well placed to find employment. Starting gross salaries typically range from around €26,000 to €30,000 annually, with tips and service charges often supplementing income. Experienced supervisors and team leaders can earn in the region of €32,000 to €38,000 per year.
AI is beginning to influence hospitality through digital ordering systems, reservation management software, and customer feedback analytics, which you will encounter in modern venues. Automated ordering tablets and contactless payment systems are now common on the floor, and familiarity with these tools is increasingly expected. However, the personal, human element of quality food and beverage service — building rapport, reading a table, and responding to individual guest needs — remains firmly beyond automation. AI is therefore more of a tool that supports your work than a threat to skilled front-of-house roles.
