What will you learn?

A Geography degree explores the relationship between people, places and the natural environment, blending human and physical geography across your studies. You will examine topics such as climate change, urban development, migration, geomorphology and environmental sustainability. A significant and increasingly valued component is Geographic Information Systems (GIS), where you learn to collect, analyse and visualise spatial data using professional mapping software. Fieldwork is central to the course — you can expect residential field trips, local surveys and data-collection projects throughout your studies. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities in European universities. A typical week combines lectures, GIS lab sessions, seminars and independent research, with fieldwork woven in across all years.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including English at Ordinary level or above. Higher Level Maths and a science subject such as Biology or Geography are advantageous but rarely strictly required. CAO points for Geography programmes at institutions like UCD, TCD, Maynooth and UCC are generally moderate, though entry to some combined honours programmes can be more competitive. Students holding a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET/PLC award in Environmental Science, Social Studies or a related area may access progression routes to Level 7 or Level 8 programmes. Mature students aged 23 or over can apply directly and are assessed on relevant life and work experience, while HEAR and DARE schemes support applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged or disability backgrounds.

Career Prospects

Demand for Geography graduates in Ireland has grown steadily, driven by increased investment in climate adaptation, spatial planning and green infrastructure. GIS skills in particular are highly sought after across technology, utilities and government sectors. Graduate unemployment rates are low, and many graduates enter structured graduate programmes with local authorities or state bodies. The breadth of the degree also allows graduates to move into education, international development and data analytics.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and machine learning are increasingly integrated into GIS and remote sensing, enabling faster and more accurate analysis of large spatial datasets. As a Geography student you will likely encounter AI-assisted tools for land-use classification, flood risk modelling and urban planning simulations. These developments enhance rather than replace the geographer's role, as human interpretation and contextual knowledge remain essential. Graduates with combined GIS and AI literacy will be particularly competitive in the evolving environmental and planning job market.

How to apply

Undergraduate Geography programmes at Irish universities are accessed via the CAO (Central Applications Office) at cao.ie, using your Leaving Certificate results; applicants should check each institution's specific subject requirements, as some programmes may require or recommend Higher Level Maths or a science subject. Ulster University in Northern Ireland uses UCAS rather than CAO, so applicants from the Republic should apply directly through ucas.com.
