What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 programme gives you a solid grounding in the practical and theoretical skills needed to work in a professional salon environment. You will learn cutting techniques for a range of hair types, colouring and highlighting methods, chemical treatments such as perming and relaxing, and how to style and finish hair to a professional standard. Client consultation, health and safety, and salon hygiene are woven throughout the course. A typical week combines hands-on practice in a training salon with classroom sessions covering hair science and business basics. Most programmes include a work placement in a local salon, giving you real-world experience with paying clients.

Required Education

Entry to this course typically requires a Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied, though some ETB colleges will consider Junior Cycle results combined with relevant work experience or a portfolio of interest. There are no specific Higher-level subject requirements, but English is important for client communication and written assessments. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) are welcome and may be admitted without formal qualifications on the basis of relevant experience. Some providers accept applicants directly from Transition Year or fifth year on a part-time basis. HEAR and DARE access routes may be available depending on the college; contact your local ETB or College of Further Education for specific entry requirements.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled hairdressers remains steady in Ireland, with salons in both urban centres and rural towns consistently seeking qualified staff. The sector offers flexibility, including self-employment and mobile hairdressing, which suit a range of lifestyle needs. Graduates who complete the full apprenticeship and build a strong client base can progress to senior stylist or salon owner roles. While wages at entry level are modest, experienced and self-employed stylists can earn competitively, with typical gross salaries ranging from around €24,000 to €40,000 depending on experience, location, and whether tips are included.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence hairdressing through tools that help clients visualise colour changes or new styles before any work is done, using augmented reality apps and image-generation software. Salon management software increasingly automates booking, client records, and stock ordering. However, the core skills of hairdressing — precision cutting, colour application, and building client relationships — are inherently hands-on and human, meaning AI poses a low displacement risk to skilled practitioners. Staying familiar with digital client-facing tools will be useful as salons modernise their services.
