This course trains you to manage payroll operations accurately and in compliance with Irish tax and employment law. You study PAYE Modernisation, PRSI calculations, USC, tax credits, and Revenue real-time reporting using industry-standard payroll software. Practical workshops simulate processing weekly, fortnightly, and monthly payroll runs for employees at different pay scales and contract types. You also cover statutory leave entitlements, benefit-in-kind, and year-end procedures such as P60 equivalents and Revenue returns. A typical week involves a mix of classroom instruction on legislation, hands-on software labs, and case-study exercises. Some colleges include a short workplace placement in a finance or HR shared-services environment.
Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, with passes in English and Maths at Ordinary level as a minimum; a good grounding in Junior Cycle Business or Maths is helpful. Some ETB colleges accept applicants who have completed a QQI Level 5 Business or Accounting certificate in lieu of Leaving Cert results, making this a strong progression route from a PLC. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may be admitted on the basis of relevant work experience in administration, finance, or a payroll support role, without formal entry qualifications. No CAO points process applies; places are allocated directly by the college, often on a first-come, first-served or interview basis. Keen interest in figures, attention to detail, and basic computer literacy are practical prerequisites for success on the programme.
Demand for qualified payroll professionals in Ireland is consistent, driven by Revenue's PAYE Modernisation requirements and the complexity of Irish payroll legislation, which makes self-service payroll difficult for many employers. Shared-service centres operated by multinationals in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Galway regularly recruit payroll technicians. Holders of the IPASS Certificate are recognised by employers as having a nationally accredited, practical qualification, which gives graduates a clear advantage over unqualified candidates. Progression within payroll departments can be relatively fast for motivated individuals with strong accuracy and software skills.
AI-powered payroll platforms are increasingly automating routine data entry, exception flagging, and compliance checks, which means employers now expect payroll staff to interpret software outputs rather than perform every calculation manually. Understanding how to audit AI-generated payroll reports and identify errors remains a distinctly human skill that this qualification develops. Revenue's digital-first reporting environment also means graduates must be comfortable working with integrated HR and finance systems. Overall, AI is changing the day-to-day tasks in payroll but is not reducing demand for qualified technicians who can ensure legal compliance.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
