What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 course gives you a solid grounding in how modern businesses operate on a day-to-day basis. You will study office administration, bookkeeping, payroll, and business communications, developing practical skills that employers value immediately. Much of your learning is hands-on: you will use industry-standard software such as Sage for payroll and accounts, and Microsoft Office for documents and spreadsheets. A typical week might involve completing bookkeeping exercises, drafting business correspondence, and working on a team project or presentation. Some colleges include a work placement component, giving you real office experience before you graduate. The course suits people who enjoy organisation, working with figures, and communicating clearly in a professional environment.

Required Education

Entry to this QQI Level 5 programme is typically through the Leaving Certificate, with most colleges requiring a pass in five subjects including English. Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) or Junior Cycle qualifications may also be accepted depending on the ETB or college. No specific Higher Level subjects are generally required, though a pass in Maths and good written English are very useful for the bookkeeping and communications modules. There are no CAO points involved, as applications are made directly to the college or through the PLC application system. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may be considered without formal qualifications based on relevant work or life experience. HEAR and DARE supports may be available through participating colleges for eligible applicants.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for competent office and administration staff remains consistently strong across Ireland, particularly in Dublin, Cork, and Limerick where business activity is high. Entry-level administrators can expect gross salaries in the region of €24,000 to €30,000 per year, with payroll and accounts roles often at the higher end. With experience and further qualifications, progression to roles such as Office Manager or Senior Accounts Administrator is realistic. The broad nature of business administration skills means graduate unemployment in this field tends to be low.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are increasingly automating routine administrative tasks such as data entry, invoice processing, and scheduling, which means the nature of office work is shifting rather than disappearing. As a business administration graduate, you will be expected to work alongside AI-assisted software and understand how to use automation tools effectively. Skills such as professional communication, judgement, and relationship management remain firmly human and are growing in importance as a result. Staying up to date with evolving office technology will be an ongoing part of working in this field.
