What will you learn?

A Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree invites you to examine how societies are organised, how decisions are made, and what values should guide public life. You will study formal economic theory alongside political institutions, ethical reasoning, and the history of ideas. Modules typically combine lectures, seminars, and essay-based assessment, with opportunities for group debates and policy simulations. In later years you can specialise in areas such as political philosophy, international relations, behavioural economics, or public policy. Some programmes include a semester abroad through Erasmus+, and you may undertake a research dissertation or policy project in your final year.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, and points requirements at UCD and TCD are typically high, reflecting strong competition for limited places. You will generally need to meet minimum Leaving Certificate requirements of at least six subjects including English and Mathematics, with Higher Level Mathematics being an advantage for the economics strand. No single science subject is compulsory, but Higher Level English is strongly recommended given the essay-intensive nature of the course. Applicants without Leaving Certificate qualifications may enter through QQI Level 5 or 6 FET/PLC awards in Social Science, Business, or Humanities, subject to specific QQI entry requirements at each institution. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature route, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible students.

Career Prospects

Demand for analytically skilled graduates in Ireland's public and private sectors remains consistently strong, particularly in policy, economics, and governance roles. The growth of multinational headquarters and EU-facing organisations in Dublin creates ongoing opportunities for graduates with international and institutional knowledge. Starting salaries in the Civil Service and consultancy sectors are modest but progress steadily, with senior policy and analyst roles typically earning between €55,000 and €90,000 gross per year. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree means graduates compete effectively across a wide range of graduate recruitment programmes.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are already reshaping research and policy analysis, automating data processing and enabling more sophisticated modelling of economic and social trends. As a PPE student you will increasingly be expected to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs and understand their ethical and political implications. The philosophical and ethical strands of the degree are particularly relevant, as debates around algorithmic decision-making, data governance, and AI regulation are entering mainstream policy agendas. Graduates who combine analytical rigour with ethical literacy will be well placed to work at the intersection of technology policy and public governance.
