As a Parliamentary Assistant, you provide research, administrative and communications support to a Teachta Dála (TD) or Senator working in and around Leinster House. Your daily work involves drafting correspondence, preparing briefing notes, monitoring legislation, and following debates in Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann. You liaise with constituents, government departments, public bodies and other political offices on behalf of the officeholder, helping to manage both parliamentary and constituency casework. You also assist with press releases, social media content and communications to keep the public informed of the politician's work.
Listen: a day as a Parliamentary Assistant
You arrive at Leinster House just before 8:30 a.m., badge through security and head straight to the office you share with one or two other staff. Before the TD arrives, you check overnight emails, scan the morning news on rte.ie and the Irish Times, and flag anything relevant to your TD's portfolio — housing, say, or rural transport. You print a quick briefing sheet summarising the day's Order Paper, which lists the business to be debated in the Dáil chamber. By 9:15 a.m. you are drafting responses to constituent emails that came in yesterday. One family is waiting on a social housing transfer, so you ring the relevant local authority and note the reference number for the file. Another email concerns a planning query; you locate the correct section of the relevant government department's website and draft a holding reply, explaining that you are making enquiries on the TD's behalf. This kind of casework takes up a large part of every morning.
Most Parliamentary Assistants hold an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree, typically in areas such as Politics, Law, Public Administration, History, Economics or Communications, available at universities such as UCD, TCD, DCU, University of Galway and Maynooth. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Politics & Society, History, English and Business Studies, which develop the analytical and communication skills central to the role. Some entrants come through a Level 7 degree in Public Administration or Social Science before gaining experience and moving into parliamentary work. There is no statutory professional registration body for this role, though a solid grounding in Irish political institutions, legislative processes and public policy is highly valued by employers. Postgraduate study at NFQ Level 9 in areas such as Public Policy, Law or European Politics can improve competitiveness for more senior research roles within parliament. Practical experience through internships with political parties, think-tanks or advocacy organisations is also highly regarded.
Most Parliamentary Assistants begin in junior research or administrative roles within a political office, party headquarters or a public affairs organisation before moving into Leinster House. With experience, you may progress to a Senior Parliamentary Assistant or Chief of Staff role within a political office, or move into policy research roles in the Oireachtas Library and Research Service. Some Parliamentary Assistants transition into broader public service careers with government departments, statutory bodies or advocacy organisations, where their knowledge of policy and legislative processes is highly valued. Others pursue postgraduate qualifications and move into political consultancy, lobbying, journalism or academic research in political science.
AI tools are already being used to assist with drafting correspondence, summarising lengthy legislative documents and monitoring media coverage, reducing time spent on routine research tasks. Parliamentary Assistants who embrace these tools can focus more on higher-value activities such as strategic advice, stakeholder relationships and nuanced constituency casework. However, the deeply interpersonal and politically sensitive nature of the role means that human judgement, discretion and contextual understanding remain essential and are not easily replicated by AI. Developing competency in AI-assisted research and content drafting tools will become an increasingly expected baseline skill in political offices.
