What will you learn?

A Social Work degree prepares you to support individuals, families and communities facing challenges such as poverty, addiction, mental ill-health, disability, domestic abuse and child welfare concerns. You study social policy, psychology, sociology, law and ethics alongside practice theory. A defining feature of the programme is its extensive supervised placement component — over 1,000 hours spent working in real settings such as Tusla child protection services, HSE community teams, probation, disability organisations and family resource centres. In a typical week you balance lectures and tutorials on campus with reflective practice seminars and, during placement blocks, full working days in your placement agency. The degree is approved by CORU, Ireland's health and social care regulator, meaning graduation grants eligibility to register as a qualified social worker.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO and is competitive, with points typically described as high due to strong demand and limited places. You generally need a minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects including English, and many programmes look favourably on higher-level performance in English, a science, or a social science subject. There are no fixed Higher-level Maths requirements for most programmes, though strong literacy and communication skills are essential. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in Health, Social Care or Community Development can provide a progression route onto the programme, particularly for mature applicants. Mature students (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature applicant pathway on the CAO and are assessed on life and work experience as well as interview. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available at all four offering institutions for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified social workers in Ireland remains consistently strong, driven by ongoing investment in Tusla, HSE community care and disability services under the EPSEN framework. CORU registration is a legal requirement to practise, which protects the professional standing of graduates and limits competition from unqualified workers. Newly qualified social workers can expect gross starting salaries in the region of €36,000–€42,000 in the public sector, rising significantly with experience and grade. International opportunities are also strong, particularly in the UK, Australia and Canada, where Irish CORU registration is widely recognised.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to assist in social work through risk-assessment algorithms used by some child protection services and predictive analytics in housing and homelessness services, though their use raises significant ethical concerns around bias and human rights. As a social worker you will need to critically evaluate AI-generated risk scores rather than rely on them uncritically, and professional bodies including CORU are developing guidance on responsible use. Core relational and advocacy skills — building trust, making nuanced judgements and representing clients — remain deeply human competencies that AI cannot replicate. Programmes are increasingly incorporating digital ethics and data literacy modules to prepare graduates for this evolving landscape.
