What does an Accounting Technician do?

As an Accounting Technician you record and process the day-to-day financial transactions of a business or organisation, including sales, purchases, payments, and receipts. You maintain ledgers, prepare trial balances, reconcile accounts, and ensure all financial records comply with Irish bookkeeping regulations and company policies. You work closely with qualified accountants, finance managers, and colleagues across departments to keep financial information accurate and up to date. Your role may also involve preparing VAT returns, processing payroll, and assisting with the preparation of financial statements. Accounting Technicians are employed across a wide range of sectors, from small businesses and accountancy practices to multinational firms and public-sector bodies.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Accounting Technician

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the office at half eight, make a coffee, and open Sage, the accounting software your employer uses. Before anything else, you check the bank account online and match overnight transactions against what is recorded in the system. Two payments came in from customers yesterday afternoon — you post these to the sales ledger, making sure each one is allocated to the correct invoice. It is methodical work, but getting it wrong creates problems later, so you take your time. By nine o'clock you move on to purchase invoices that arrived in yesterday's post and email. You code each one — deciding which expense category it belongs to — then enter it into the purchase ledger. One supplier invoice does not match the purchase order your colleague raised last week, so you send a quick email to the purchasing department to query it before you post anything. You cannot just approve a figure that does not add up.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

A Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Accounting, Business, and Maths provides a strong foundation for this role. The most recognised route into the profession in Ireland is through Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI), which offers a dedicated qualification at NFQ Level 6 that can be studied full-time, part-time, or through a PLC course at a College of Further Education. Some entrants first complete a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 Business or Accounting PLC course at an ETB college before pursuing the ATI qualification. Technological universities and institutes also offer Higher Certificate (NFQ Level 6) programmes in Accounting or Business that cover the core competencies required. There is no statutory registration body for Accounting Technicians in Ireland, but holding the ATI qualification is widely regarded by employers as the professional standard for this level of work. Experienced Accounting Technicians may progress to Chartered Accountancy or other professional accountancy qualifications through bodies such as Chartered Accountants Ireland or ACCA.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Accounting Technicians begin their careers in accounts assistant or junior bookkeeping roles within accountancy practices or business finance teams, gaining practical experience across a range of bookkeeping tasks. With a few years of experience and the ATI qualification, you can take on greater responsibility, managing the full accounts function for a small business or supervising junior staff. Many Accounting Technicians choose to progress to full professional accountancy qualifications through Chartered Accountants Ireland, ACCA, or CPA Ireland, opening the door to roles such as Financial Accountant or Management Accountant. Others develop specialist expertise in payroll, taxation, or practice management and build rewarding long-term careers at technician level.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered accounting tools are increasingly automating routine data entry, bank reconciliation, and transaction categorisation tasks that have traditionally formed a core part of the Accounting Technician's workload. This means the role is shifting towards reviewing, interpreting, and quality-checking AI-generated outputs rather than manually inputting every transaction. Technicians who develop strong skills in using and evaluating digital finance tools will remain highly valuable, as human judgement is still needed to identify anomalies, apply regulatory knowledge, and communicate financial information to non-finance colleagues. Overall, AI is likely to increase productivity in the role rather than eliminate it, but continuous upskilling in technology will be important.
