As an Aircraft Maintenance Coordinator you plan, schedule, and oversee all maintenance activities carried out on aircraft in hangars and workshops, ensuring every task is completed safely, on time, and in line with aviation regulations. You liaise with engineers, technicians, and senior managers to allocate the right tools, parts, and personnel for each maintenance event, keeping aircraft available for flight operations. Your day-to-day work involves tracking maintenance schedules on computerised management systems, identifying potential bottlenecks before they cause delays, and reporting any safety hazards or security incidents to the appropriate authorities. You typically work for airlines such as Aer Lingus or Ryanair, or for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) providers operating at facilities including Dublin, Cork, and Shannon airports.
Listen: a day as an Aircraft Maintenance Coordinator
You arrive at the maintenance base at Dublin Airport just before 06:30, well before the first technicians clock on. You log into the computerised maintenance management system, known in the industry as CMMS, and pull up the day's workload. Three aircraft are due in the hangar today: one for a routine A-check, which covers basic inspections and servicing, and two for component replacements flagged during the previous night's line checks. You print the task cards that the licensed aircraft maintenance engineers will sign off on and cross-reference each one against the aircraft's technical logbook. By 07:15 you are on the hangar floor for the morning briefing. You run through each job with the lead engineers, confirming that the correct parts are already in the stores. One hydraulic actuator for the second aircraft has not yet cleared customs, and you spend the next forty minutes on the phone to the freight agent and then to the stores supervisor to chase an estimated arrival time. This kind of delay is not unusual, but it requires you to rejig the day's schedule so the technicians are not standing idle.
A strong Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Technical Graphics provides a solid foundation for entry into this field. Most Aircraft Maintenance Coordinators hold a minimum NFQ Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree in Aviation Technology, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, available at institutions such as TU Dublin or the University of Limerick. Alternatively, completing a SOLAS-approved aircraft maintenance apprenticeship leading to a QQI Level 6 award, followed by relevant industry experience, can also provide a pathway into coordination roles. Familiarity with EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) regulations is essential, and many coordinators work towards or hold an EASA Part-66 aircraft maintenance licence in a relevant category. Continuing professional development through industry bodies such as Engineers Ireland or aviation-specific training programmes is expected throughout your career.
Many people enter this role after gaining practical experience as licensed aircraft maintenance engineers or technicians, then moving into scheduling or coordination responsibilities. With several years in a coordination role, you may progress to Maintenance Planning Manager or Base Maintenance Manager within an airline or MRO organisation. Further advancement can lead to senior operations or quality management positions, particularly as you build expertise in EASA regulatory frameworks and large-scale project management. Pursuing a postgraduate qualification in Aviation Management or Engineering Management can accelerate progression to director-level roles.
AI-powered predictive maintenance tools are increasingly being integrated into CMMS platforms, allowing coordinators to anticipate component failures and schedule interventions more efficiently than traditional time-based methods. Automation is taking over routine data entry and basic scheduling tasks, freeing coordinators to focus on complex decision-making, stakeholder management, and exception handling. However, the regulatory, safety-critical, and interpersonal dimensions of the role mean that human oversight and judgement remain essential and are unlikely to be replaced by AI in the foreseeable future. Coordinators who develop competence in interpreting AI-generated maintenance insights will be better positioned to add value in a technology-driven environment.
