What does a Biotechnology Technician do?

As a Biotechnology Technician you support scientists and researchers in laboratory and manufacturing environments, carrying out tests, experiments, and data collection that underpin the development and production of biological products. Your daily work involves setting up and calibrating laboratory equipment, preparing reagents, running assays, and gathering and recording experimental data with precision. You may work in quality control, research and development, or process support roles within Ireland's thriving biopharma and medical device sectors. You collaborate closely with research scientists, quality assurance teams, and production staff to ensure that laboratory procedures meet strict regulatory and safety standards.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Biotechnology Technician

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:45 am. You work at a biopharma manufacturing site in Cork — one of many such facilities along what people in the industry sometimes call the Pharma Valley corridor. You cycle in and badge through security by 7:55 am, change into your lab coat and safety glasses in the gowning room, and check the day's work schedule on the electronic lab management system before the 8:00 am team stand-up meeting. The morning is spent in the quality control laboratory. Your first task is to calibrate the pH meter and spectrophotometer before any samples are processed — if calibration falls outside acceptable limits, you log a deviation report and nothing moves forward until the issue is resolved. This is non-negotiable under GMP, Good Manufacturing Practice, the strict regulatory standards that govern how biological medicines are made and tested in Ireland and across the EU.

Required Education

A strong Leaving Certificate with Higher Level Biology and Chemistry is the typical starting point, and Mathematics or Physics is also an advantage. Most Biotechnology Technicians in Ireland hold a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline such as Biotechnology, Bioscience, or Applied Science, available at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, MTU, SETU, and TUS. Level 8 Honours Bachelor programmes in Biotechnology or Biochemistry at universities such as UCD, UCC, University of Galway, and DCU are also a common route and can improve long-term career prospects within the sector. A QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Science or Laboratory Techniques from a College of Further Education may provide a progression pathway into a Level 7 programme. No statutory registration body is required for this role, though professional development through bodies such as the Institute of Biomedical Science or the Biochemical Society is encouraged by many employers.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Biotechnology Technicians begin in entry-level lab or process support roles within a biopharma company, a research institute, or a contract research organisation (CRO). With experience and continued professional development, you can progress to senior technician or scientist roles, taking on greater responsibility for experimental design, data interpretation, or team mentoring. Some technicians pursue further study at Level 8 or Level 9 to move into research scientist, quality assurance specialist, or regulatory affairs positions. In Ireland's large multinational biopharma sector, structured graduate programmes and in-house training schemes can accelerate progression significantly.

AI Impact on the job

AI and machine learning tools are increasingly being used in biotechnology to accelerate data analysis, predict experimental outcomes, and optimise bioprocesses, which means Biotechnology Technicians need a growing degree of digital and data literacy. Routine data logging and some quality monitoring tasks are becoming automated through laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and AI-driven analytics platforms. However, the hands-on laboratory and equipment-management aspects of the role remain firmly human-led and cannot easily be replicated by AI. Technicians who develop skills in working with data science tools and automated laboratory systems will be particularly well placed in the evolving biopharma environment.
