What does an Energy Engineer do?

As an Energy Engineer, you design, analyse and optimise systems that produce, convert and distribute energy in efficient and sustainable ways. Your daily work can involve conducting energy audits of buildings or industrial facilities, modelling energy consumption, specifying heat pump systems, and overseeing SEAI-funded retrofit projects. You work closely with architects, mechanical and electrical contractors, sustainability consultants, and public sector clients to ensure that projects meet regulatory and environmental targets. Energy Engineers are employed across a wide range of sectors in Ireland, including construction, utilities, manufacturing, the public sector and renewable energy development.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Energy Engineer

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at your engineering consultancy's open-plan office in Cork at 8:15 on a Tuesday morning, grab a coffee, and open your laptop to check emails before the day kicks off properly. A local authority client has sent overnight queries about the BER — Building Energy Rating — calculations for a social housing retrofit scheme you are managing under a SEAI Better Energy Communities grant. You flag those queries to deal with after your first site visit. By 9:00 you are in the car heading to a mid-terrace house in Togher where a heat pump and external wall insulation are being installed. You walk the site with the mechanical contractor, checking that the air-to-water heat pump is positioned correctly and that the pipe sizing matches the specifications you submitted for planning. You photograph everything for the project file — this documentation matters if SEAI carry out a quality assurance inspection later.

Required Education

A strong Leaving Certificate with Higher Level Maths and Physics is the typical starting point for this career. Most Energy Engineers enter the field with an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Energy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, available at institutions such as TU Dublin, University of Galway, UCC, UL and ATU. Some graduates pursue an NFQ Level 9 Masters in Energy Engineering or Sustainable Energy to specialise further, which can be advantageous for senior roles. Professional development through Engineers Ireland, including working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, is highly regarded by employers in Ireland. There is no statutory registration requirement for Energy Engineers, but Chartered status with Engineers Ireland significantly enhances career prospects.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Energy Engineers begin their careers in a junior or graduate engineering role within a consultancy, utilities company, or contractor, working under the supervision of senior engineers on retrofit schemes, renewable energy projects or industrial energy management programmes. After a few years of practice, engineers typically take on greater design responsibility and may manage smaller projects independently, often working towards Chartered Engineer status with Engineers Ireland. With experience, progression into senior engineering, project management or technical director roles is common, particularly within larger consultancies, grid operators such as EirGrid, or energy-intensive industries. Some experienced engineers move into policy advisory roles with bodies such as the SEAI, the Climate Action Regional Offices, or the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.

AI Impact on the job

AI and advanced simulation tools are increasingly used by Energy Engineers to model building energy performance, optimise grid load balancing and predict maintenance needs for renewable energy assets, making analysis faster and more accurate. Automated energy monitoring platforms and machine learning algorithms can now process large datasets from smart meters and building management systems, tasks that previously required significant manual effort. Rather than displacing Energy Engineers, these tools are shifting the role towards higher-level interpretation, strategy and decision-making based on AI-generated insights. Engineers who develop competency in data analytics and digital energy modelling tools will be best placed to take advantage of these developments.
