What does a Packaging Technologist do?

As a Packaging Technologist you design, develop and test packaging solutions for products across sectors such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. You analyse how packaging protects goods throughout the supply chain, assessing factors such as durability, shelf life and regulatory compliance. Your daily work involves collaborating with product development teams, suppliers and customers to create packaging that meets both technical specifications and sustainability targets. You also produce technical documentation, conduct quality evaluations and ensure that all packaging complies with Irish and EU legal requirements, including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Packaging Technologist

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the food manufacturing site just outside Naas at 7:45 a.m., sign in at reception and head straight to the production floor for a short walkround before the day's meetings begin. You check that last night's shift ran the new recyclable film correctly on the vertical form-fill-seal machine, looking for seal integrity issues or label misalignment that the operators may have flagged in the handover log. By 8:30 a.m. you are at your desk reviewing a batch of transit testing results that arrived overnight from an external ISTA-certified laboratory in Dublin. ISTA stands for International Safe Transit Association, and its tests simulate the vibration and drops a pallet endures on a lorry from your site to a retailer's distribution centre. Two of the corrugated-box variants have failed the compression test, so you open your technical file and begin drafting a change request for the board supplier in Drogheda.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical entry route into this profession. Relevant programmes include degrees in Food Science, Packaging Technology, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or Manufacturing Engineering, available at institutions such as UCD, UCC, UL, TU Dublin and ATU. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Design and Communication Graphics, and Mathematics at Higher level provide a strong foundation. Some graduates enter via a Level 7 degree in a related discipline and subsequently top up to Level 8 through add-on programmes. A postgraduate qualification at NFQ Level 9 in food technology, regulatory affairs or sustainable packaging can accelerate progression into specialist or senior roles. There is no statutory professional registration body for packaging technologists in Ireland, though membership of Engineers Ireland or the Institute of Packaging (IoP) is professionally valued.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most packaging technologists begin in a junior or graduate technologist role within a food, pharma or consumer goods company, gaining hands-on experience in testing, compliance and supplier liaison. With three to five years of experience you can progress to a senior technologist or packaging specialist position, taking ownership of complex projects and mentoring junior staff. Further progression typically leads to roles such as Packaging Manager or R&D Manager, where you hold full responsibility for a team and departmental budgets. Some experienced professionals move into consulting, regulatory affairs or sustainability strategy roles, while others pursue an NFQ Level 9 qualification to deepen their technical or leadership expertise.

AI Impact on the job

AI-driven design tools and simulation software are beginning to accelerate the prototyping and testing phases of packaging development, reducing the time needed to validate new designs. Machine learning applications can assist in predicting packaging failure modes and optimising material usage, making some routine analytical tasks faster and more accurate. However, the creative, regulatory and relationship-management aspects of the role — such as interpreting new legislation or negotiating with suppliers — remain firmly human-led. Overall, AI is expected to enhance the productivity of packaging technologists rather than displace them, with professionals who can work alongside these tools gaining a competitive advantage.
