What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 course gives you practical, hands-on skills in diagnosing faults and repairing a wide range of electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and consumer electronics. You will learn to solder components, replace screens and batteries, interpret circuit diagrams, and use diagnostic tools and software. Specialisms can include mobile device repair, audio-visual equipment, and domestic appliances. A typical week combines workshop sessions where you handle real devices with short theory classes covering electronics fundamentals and health and safety. Many programmes include a work placement in a repair shop, electronics retailer, or IT services environment. The course is closely aligned with the growing right-to-repair movement, which is reshaping how consumers and businesses approach product maintenance.

Required Education

Entry to this QQI Level 5 programme typically requires a Junior Cycle qualification or equivalent, with most ETB colleges setting a minimum of five passes including English and Maths. No specific Leaving Certificate results are required, making this course accessible to school leavers, career changers, and adults returning to education. A genuine interest in electronics and good manual dexterity are expected, and some providers may ask you to attend an interview or brief skills assessment. Mature students (aged 23 or over) are welcome and can apply directly to the college without formal academic entry requirements. BTEI and community education routes are also available through local ETBs for those who wish to build up credits gradually.

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled repair technicians is growing steadily as EU right-to-repair regulations push retailers and manufacturers to offer repair services. Independent repair shops are expanding in Irish towns and cities, and corporate IT departments increasingly value in-house hardware repair capacity to reduce costs. Starting salaries typically range from around €26,000 to €32,000 gross per year, with experienced technicians or those running their own businesses earning considerably more. The skills gap in this trade means motivated graduates generally find employment relatively quickly.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-powered diagnostic tools and apps are already being used to identify faults more quickly in smartphones and laptops, and this is likely to expand to other device categories. As a repair technician, you will increasingly work alongside software-based fault trees and remote diagnostic platforms rather than being replaced by them. AI cannot yet perform the physical, fine-motor work of soldering or component replacement, so hands-on skills remain central and in demand. Familiarity with AI diagnostics tools will become a useful addition to your technical repertoire.
