What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 course gives you a solid grounding in photography as both a craft and a creative discipline. You learn to operate DSLR and mirrorless cameras with full manual control, understand lighting techniques for studio and location work, and develop images through both digital post-production software and traditional darkroom processes. Specialist areas typically covered include portrait, documentary, product, and landscape photography. A significant part of your week is spent shooting on assignment, critiquing work in group sessions, and building a professional portfolio. Some colleges include short industry placements or community project briefs, giving you real-world experience alongside your technical studies.

Required Education

Entry to this course typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, with a minimum of five passes at Ordinary level including English. No specific Higher-level subjects are required, though a background in Art, Design & Communication Graphics, or any humanities subject is useful preparation. Some ETB colleges also accept applicants who left school early, provided they can demonstrate a genuine interest in photography through a portfolio interview or personal statement. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly without standard Leaving Certificate results. HEAR and DARE access schemes may be available at participating colleges for eligible applicants. The course is also suitable as a return-to-education pathway for adults already working in a related creative role.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

The photography market in Ireland is competitive, particularly for full-time employed positions, but demand for skilled freelance photographers remains steady across weddings, corporate events, e-commerce, and digital media. Gross annual salaries for employed photographers typically range from around €25,000 to €40,000, with experienced specialists or established freelancers earning more. Graduates who combine strong technical skills with business acumen and a distinctive style tend to build sustainable careers. Progression to a Level 7 or Level 8 degree significantly strengthens prospects for roles in editorial, fine art, or commercial photography.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools such as generative image software and automated editing platforms are changing parts of the photography industry, particularly in stock imagery and basic retouching work. However, commissioned photography requiring human judgement, relationship-building with clients, and on-location problem-solving remains difficult to automate. At Level 5, you will likely use AI-assisted editing tools such as those built into Adobe Lightroom, which can speed up workflow without replacing creative decisions. Understanding both the opportunities and the limitations of AI in image-making is increasingly part of a photographer's professional literacy.
