The Ryanair Future Flyer Academy is an ab-initio pilot training programme that takes you from little or no flying experience through to a fully qualified EASA Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). Training is delivered with partner academies such as Atlantic Flight Training Academy (AFTA) in Cork, covering ground school theory, single-engine and multi-engine flight training, instrument rating, and multi-crew cooperation. A typical week blends intensive classroom study of subjects like aviation meteorology and air law with scheduled simulator sessions and actual flight hours. On successful completion you progress to a Boeing 737 type rating and structured line training with Ryanair, culminating in a conditional offer of a first-officer position. The programme is practically focused from day one, with students logging flight hours under close instructor mentorship throughout.
Entry requires a minimum age of 17.5 at the start of training and a valid EU/EEA passport. You must hold or be able to obtain an EASA Class 1 Medical Certificate before commencing flight training. Academically, a Leaving Certificate with a good standard in Maths and Physics at Higher or Ordinary level is expected, as ground school involves significant technical and mathematical content; Higher-level Maths is strongly advantageous. English language proficiency to at least ICAO Level 4 is mandatory. Selection involves psychometric aptitude testing, medical screening, and a multi-stage interview process run by Ryanair; there is no CAO points route as this is a directly applied industry programme. Applicants who have completed a QQI Level 5 or 6 award in aviation studies or a relevant science or engineering Leaving Certificate profile will have a strong foundation for the technical ground school modules.
Demand for commercial pilots in Europe is strong and is projected to remain so through the late 2020s, driven by fleet expansion and an ageing pilot workforce across major carriers. Ryanair's conditional first-officer offer provides an unusually direct pathway into employment compared with self-funded ATPL routes, significantly reducing the uncertainty typical of ab-initio training. First-officer salaries at major European low-cost carriers are competitive, with Irish-based pilots typically earning in the region of €50,000–€75,000 gross per annum at first-officer level, rising substantially with promotion to captain. Long-term prospects are good provided you maintain medical fitness and accumulate the required flight hours for ATPL privileges.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in aviation for predictive maintenance, flight-path optimisation, and advanced flight management systems, meaning pilots must understand and work alongside automated systems rather than simply override them. AI-driven simulation tools are also enhancing ground-school and simulator training, allowing more personalised feedback on procedural errors and decision-making under pressure. However, regulatory frameworks and the safety-critical nature of commercial aviation mean that a qualified, medically certified pilot in command remains a legal and operational requirement for the foreseeable future. The role is evolving toward higher-level systems management and decision-making, making human factors and crew resource management skills more important, not less.

How to apply
This is not a CAO course. The Ryanair Future Flyer Academy is an employer-led, self-funded ab-initio ATPL programme delivered through Atlantic Flight Training Academy (AFTA) in Cork. Applicants apply directly to Ryanair via their careers portal, must pass psychometric and aptitude tests, a medical (Class 1 EASA), and an interview; successful candidates then self-fund (or arrange finance for) the integrated ATPL training at AFTA, with a conditional first-officer job offer from Ryanair upon successful completion.
