As a Business Analyst you act as the vital link between an organisation's business needs and the solutions — often technological — that address them. You gather and document requirements from stakeholders, map out existing processes, and identify where improvements can be made in efficiency, cost, or performance. On a typical day you might facilitate workshops with department managers, analyse financial or operational data, and produce detailed reports or specifications for IT development teams. You work closely with project managers, software developers, senior management, and external clients across sectors such as banking, insurance, and technology. Your recommendations directly shape how organisations invest resources and adapt their strategies.
Listen: a day as a Business Analyst
You arrive at your desk in a mid-sized financial services firm in Dublin's docklands at 8:45 on a Tuesday morning. You grab a coffee and open Jira, the project-tracking tool your team uses, to check whether the developers have flagged any queries on the requirements document you submitted last week. Two comments are waiting — one asking you to clarify what should happen when a customer submits a duplicate claim, and another questioning a business rule around account thresholds. You note both down to address before lunch. At nine-thirty you join a video call on Microsoft Teams with the operations manager and two colleagues from the compliance department. The purpose is a requirements-gathering workshop for a new customer-onboarding process. You share your screen and walk everyone through a process map you built in Lucidchart, tracing each step from a customer's first contact through to identity verification. People talk over each other occasionally, and pinning down exactly who owns each approval step takes longer than planned.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum for this role in Ireland; relevant programmes include Business Information Systems, Business & Management, Computer Science with Business, or Data Analytics offered at universities such as UCD, TU Dublin, DCU, and University of Galway. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Mathematics, Business, Accounting, and Economics at Higher level, along with strong English for report writing. Some graduates enter the field with a Level 8 in a single discipline and supplement it with a Level 9 postgraduate qualification such as an MSc in Business Analytics or an MBA. Professional certifications such as the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis, the PMI-PBA, or Agile/Scrum qualifications (SAFe, PRINCE2 Agile) are widely valued by Irish employers and can be pursued alongside work. There is no statutory professional registration body for Business Analysts in Ireland, though membership of bodies such as the Irish Computer Society or Chartered Management Institute adds credibility. Some people transition into the role from IT, finance, or operations backgrounds, using Springboard+ funded upskilling courses to bridge any gaps.
Many Business Analysts begin as Junior or Associate Business Analysts, often after a graduate programme in a financial services firm, multinational tech company, or consultancy based in Dublin or Cork. After two to four years building domain knowledge and methodology skills, you typically progress to Business Analyst or Senior Business Analyst, taking ownership of larger and more complex projects. From there, experienced professionals often move into Lead BA, BA Manager, or Product Owner roles, or transition into IT Project Management or Strategy Consulting. Some pursue a Level 9 qualification such as an MBA or MSc in Business Analytics to accelerate progression into senior leadership or specialist consulting partnerships.
AI tools are automating some of the more routine aspects of business analysis, such as initial data gathering, basic process documentation, and simple report generation, which means you must add value through judgement, stakeholder relationships, and strategic insight rather than data collection alone. Natural language processing tools can accelerate requirements documentation, but the human skill of facilitating workshops and interpreting organisational politics cannot yet be replicated by AI. Business Analysts who upskill in areas such as machine learning literacy, AI ethics assessment, and automation impact analysis will be best positioned to lead AI-driven change programmes. Overall, AI is reshaping rather than replacing the role, shifting the focus towards higher-level analysis and change leadership.
