Outlook
Stable
This apprenticeship trains you in the full print production process, from pre-press file preparation and colour management through to running digital, offset and large-format print machinery. You will learn to operate and maintain printing equipment used in signage, packaging, commercial print houses and promotional materials. The programme combines on-the-job learning with an employer alongside off-the-job training at a designated training provider, typically one day or block release per week. A typical week might involve preparing artwork files, calibrating printers, managing substrates and finishing processes such as laminating or cutting. You develop strong technical skills alongside an understanding of quality control, health and safety, and client specifications.

Graphic Design
Entry to this apprenticeship is through an employer who registers you with SOLAS via the Generation Apprenticeship programme, so securing a position with a print or signage company is the first step. Most employers expect you to have completed the Leaving Certificate, though a specific points requirement does not apply as this is an employer-led route. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Art, Technical Graphics, Design and Communication Graphics, and Maths. Some employers may consider applicants with a relevant QQI Level 5 or 6 award in Graphic Design or Print Technology in place of the Leaving Certificate. You must be at least 16 years of age and able to demonstrate a genuine interest in print production. HEAR and DARE schemes do not apply here, but mature applicants over 23 may approach employers directly.
The print industry in Ireland has evolved significantly, with declining demand for traditional volume print offset by strong growth in large-format, digital, sustainable packaging and personalised print. Qualified apprentices with digital skills and adaptability tend to find steady employment, particularly in packaging and signage. Gross salaries for experienced print technicians in Ireland typically range from around €30,000 to €45,000 depending on specialisation and employer. Specialists in large-format, UV print or packaging pre-press can command higher rates, particularly around Dublin and major urban centres.
AI-driven colour management software, automated file preflight tools and RIP (Raster Image Processor) systems are increasingly streamlining pre-press workflows, reducing manual checking time. Automated defect detection and machine learning quality-control systems are being introduced in larger print facilities. However, operating and maintaining physical print equipment, handling substrates and managing client-specific production requirements still demands hands-on technical expertise that AI cannot replace. Apprentices who become comfortable working alongside these digital tools will be better positioned in an evolving industry.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
The Print Media Apprenticeship is an employer-led programme registered with SOLAS; applicants must secure a contract of employment with an approved print industry employer, who then registers them as an apprentice through the Generation Apprenticeship portal at generationapprenticeship.ie. Off-the-job training phases are delivered at designated ETB or further education centres; there is no CAO application and no points requirement.
