As a Pharmacy Technician you work alongside pharmacists in community or hospital pharmacies, supporting the safe dispensing of medicines to patients. Your daily responsibilities include checking incoming stock, maintaining accurate medication storage conditions, processing prescriptions, and managing pharmaceutical inventory systems. In hospital settings you may prepare and distribute ward supplies, while in community pharmacy you regularly interact with customers, process medical card and private prescription claims, and use e-health technologies to verify patient records. You work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes pharmacists, GPs, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, always operating within strict legislative and quality frameworks.
Listen: a day as a Pharmacy Technician
You arrive at the community pharmacy in Mullingar at 8.45 a.m., fifteen minutes before the shutters go up. Your first job is to unlock the dispensary fridge, check its temperature log on the Centigrade monitoring system, and record that overnight readings stayed within the required two-to-eight degrees Celsius range for insulin and other cold-chain medicines. If the temperature has drifted, you flag it immediately to the supervising pharmacist before a single item is dispensed. At nine o'clock the door opens and the first customers arrive with paper prescriptions and GMS medical cards. You log into the dispensary software, usually Touchstore or a similar Irish community pharmacy system, scan each prescription barcode, and pull the patient's medication history on screen. Processing a GMS prescription means selecting the correct reimbursable item on the HSE formulary and ensuring the claim code is accurate before the pharmacist checks and signs off.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A QQI Level 6 Pharmacy Technician award, offered through ETBs and Colleges of Further Education in partnership with the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU), is the recognised entry qualification for this role in Ireland. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics are highly beneficial when applying for these courses, while English and a modern language can support patient communication skills. The programme typically combines classroom learning with supervised work placement in a community or hospital pharmacy setting. There is currently no statutory register for pharmacy technicians in Ireland, though the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) has been examining regulation, so holding a recognised QQI qualification demonstrates professional credibility. Some technicians progress to a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Pharmaceutical Science at institutes such as TU Dublin or MTU if they wish to move into more advanced pharmaceutical roles.
Most pharmacy technicians begin their careers in community pharmacy after completing their QQI Level 6 qualification, gaining hands-on experience in dispensing, stock management, and patient interaction. With a few years of experience, you may take on a senior technician role with responsibility for supervising dispensary workflow, training new staff, or managing specific hospital ward supply areas. Some technicians move into hospital pharmacy settings through HSE-based roles, where there is a more structured pay scale and opportunities to specialise in areas such as oncology, aseptic preparation, or clinical trials support. Further academic study at Level 7 or 8 in Pharmaceutical Science can open pathways into quality assurance, regulatory affairs, or pharmaceutical industry roles.
AI-assisted dispensing systems and robotic medication management are beginning to appear in larger Irish hospital pharmacies, automating some repetitive counting and packaging tasks. However, the patient-facing, regulatory, and supervisory dimensions of the pharmacy technician role remain firmly human-centred, as judgement, empathy, and professional accountability cannot be automated. AI tools are also being introduced into stock forecasting and prescription verification software, meaning technicians will increasingly need digital literacy to work alongside these systems rather than being replaced by them. Overall, AI is expected to reshape rather than eliminate the role, shifting the focus towards more complex patient interaction and quality control tasks.
