This programme is designed for practising Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) and those wishing to work in inclusive education settings. You study the principles of inclusion, disability studies, behaviour support strategies, and autism spectrum conditions in depth. Modules explore the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act framework, child protection, and communication supports such as AAC. A typical week combines lectures, online learning, and reflective practice linked to your placement or existing SNA role. You are expected to apply theory directly to your workplace, making this a highly practical, work-integrated programme. Erasmus mobility opportunities may be available at participating partner institutions.

Special Needs & Education | Explained By Prime Time
Entry to this Level 7 programme typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of five passes including English, though mature applicants and those with relevant work experience are strongly encouraged to apply. A QQI Level 5 or 6 award in Special Needs Assisting, Early Childhood Care, or a related health and social care field is a common and well-recognised progression route. CAO points requirements are generally moderate, reflecting the programme's focus on mature and working professionals. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply directly through the CAO mature applicant strand and may be interviewed. HEAR and DARE access routes are available for eligible school-leavers. Candidates already employed as SNAs in DEIS or mainstream schools will find their practical experience is formally recognised.
Demand for qualified inclusion and SNA professionals in Ireland remains strong, driven by growing identification of additional educational needs and continued government investment in the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) support services. Graduates with a Level 7 qualification are better positioned for senior or specialist roles than those holding only a Level 5 award. The shift towards more inclusive classrooms and the implementation of the Assisted Decision-Making Act have created new specialist roles at school and community level. Salaries for experienced SNAs and inclusion workers typically range from approximately €28,000 to €40,000 gross per annum, with higher earnings in senior or HSE-funded specialist roles.
AI tools are beginning to be used in special education contexts, including adaptive learning software and AAC technology enhanced by machine learning, which you will encounter during your studies. As a practitioner working directly with students with complex needs, your role centres on human relationships, ethical judgement, and physical presence — areas that AI cannot replicate. Understanding how to evaluate and critically use assistive technology, including AI-powered tools, will become an increasingly important professional skill. The core advocacy, safeguarding, and behavioural support aspects of SNA work remain firmly human-led.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
Programmes in Inclusive Practice / Special Needs Assistance at Higher Certificate or Bachelor level are typically offered as part-time or blended-learning awards and are applied for directly through the provider or via the relevant ETB, rather than through the CAO; applicants should contact each institution's admissions office for current intake dates and requirements. Some programmes are funded through SOLAS/Skillnet or the ETB network and may require learners to be working in an SNA or education support role as a condition of entry.
