What will you learn?

This apprenticeship trains you to design, install, configure and maintain computer networks used by businesses and public-sector organisations across Ireland. You study topics such as network infrastructure, routing and switching, cybersecurity fundamentals, and cloud connectivity while working full-time with an employer from day one. Your week is split between on-the-job learning in a real IT environment and off-the-job training delivered by FIT through blended online and classroom sessions. You will work towards industry-recognised certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA alongside your NFQ Level 6 award. Practical tasks include setting up local area networks, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and supporting users, giving you immediately usable skills.

Required Education

Entry to this apprenticeship requires you to secure a position with an approved employer registered through Generation Apprenticeship (SOLAS) and FIT; employers typically look for candidates aged 16 or over with a Leaving Certificate or equivalent. A Leaving Certificate with passes in English and Maths is generally expected, and Higher-level or Ordinary-level Maths is a distinct advantage given the technical content. Some employers accept QQI Level 5 IT certificates or relevant PLC qualifications in place of, or alongside, Leaving Certificate results. There is no CAO application involved; you apply directly to participating employers listed on apprenticeship.ie and FIT's own portal. Mature applicants (23 and over) without formal qualifications may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience in IT support or a related area. HEAR and DARE schemes do not apply here, but FIT runs targeted outreach to support candidates from underrepresented groups entering technology careers.

Career Prospects

The outlook for network engineering graduates in Ireland is strong, driven by continued investment in digital infrastructure, data centres, and cloud adoption by Irish businesses. Entry-level salaries typically range from approximately €28,000 to €38,000 per year, rising significantly with experience and additional certifications. Professionals holding Cisco CCNP, CompTIA Security+, or cloud networking credentials (AWS, Azure) can expect salaries in the €50,000 to €75,000 range or higher in senior roles. Progression into specialisms such as cybersecurity, cloud architecture, or network design is well-supported by Ireland's active technology sector.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-driven network management tools are increasingly used to automate routine tasks such as traffic analysis, fault detection, and performance optimisation, meaning network engineers need to understand how these tools work rather than perform every task manually. Skills in interpreting AI-generated network diagnostics and integrating AI-enabled security platforms are becoming standard expectations for employers. However, AI is unlikely to replace the hands-on, site-specific problem-solving that network engineers carry out, particularly in complex physical infrastructure environments. Keeping up to date with vendor certifications that incorporate AI and automation modules will be important throughout your career.

How to apply

The Network Engineer Apprenticeship is an employer-led programme registered with SOLAS and co-ordinated through Generation Apprenticeship and FIT; applicants must secure a contract with an approved employer, who then registers them with SOLAS and enrols them in the academic programme at one of the designated Technological University delivery partners. There is no CAO route — applications are made directly to employers or through the apprenticeship vacancy portal at apprenticeship.ie.
